The Final Countdown or So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

so, i'm in my final few days of "work" and i'm surprisingly saddened about the prospect of leaving. i mean, i've poured my heart and soul into this job, nurturing the trees with my very being, pruning them with my love and affection, and now i have to let them grow without me.

i'm just kidding. a more appropriate metaphor:

i work for an environmental organization that plants trees. a couple of weeks ago, we ripped the tree out from in front of our building in order to even out the pavement or some such. that's kind of how i feel about this place; rather than build upon the goodness that is here, or, you know, work with the tree out front to help it grow, we tear it from the earth and pretend it never existed.

deep, huh?

unfortunately, i kind of like some of the people who work here, though, and even though i know where they live, it will be kinda sad to not see them at work every day. my office is a lot like the show "the office" with its ridiculousness and quirky characters.

and i've learned things from being here. i've become a more well-rounded person (and not just a more rounded person, though all of the free bagels and lox does round out my physique quite a bit...) being able to juggle things like "supposed to be working" with "pretending to be working" and "just plain not working even a little bit" (which is what i'm mastering right now). i've also learned how to tell people i'm busy when i'm not because i don't want to do the work they have for me.

all in all, learning galore. and for a first job in the "real world" it hasn't been bad.

so, you know, so long. and thanks for all the fish.

Depression or Escapism is an Art Form

on my way to work this morning, stomping in puddles and squinting out of my rain-stained glasses, trying not to cry, i was thinking about one of my many (many) superiors, rebecca.

rebecca is quite the social butterfly:

while i sit at home on dark, cold winter nights, rebecca is out gallivanting around manhattan. last night, for instance, she had a date. (i already called dibs if things don't work out between them. and there's a line because this guy is apparently wealthy. we're up to "sloppy fourths" with becky, so take a number.)

sometimes, rebecca has benefit dinners or goes to the gym or drinks (but not with me. she always has an excuse for why she can't do THAT....)

maybe there's something to this "doing things". maybe people who do things with their evenings are happier, or at least less prone to burst into tears than me. maybe if i found a special purpose (but not in that "the jerk" sort of way) i too could somehow make it through the day to day shenanigans that currently make my life a living hell.

becky volunteers. i mean, she just started today, but she feels smug about it, superior and therefore good about life.

becca throws herself into her professional life at her hoity toity company. she makes a lot of money and gets rung by rung closer to the top of that ladder. (i'm sure she'll get there, too.)

i should think about this more. wait for it....wait for it....

okay, so i thought about it. it turns out that this theory only holds true for those named rebecca. therefore i've decided to change my name to rebecca.

no, scratch that. i've decided to get back into my bed until spring. wake me up when the sun comes out.

Re-post or Rebecca Must be Punished!

so, i was going to write in my blog today. some possible subjects were:

don't you hate pants?

what cold does to my hands.

what makes the sabbath holy?

or the ever popular:

rebecca made me do things at work today, and therefore she must be punished. (for this topic i was going to delve into rebecca's love life, then solicit all of you to find a nice jewish boy, possibly provided by your grandmothers, to sic on her. then we'd talk about her apparent obsession with brunch [why does she get to have brunch EVERY weekend? where are MY mimosas? why am i not invited? is it because i bring nice, awkward jewish boys for her??] and her lack of computer skills.)

but nay, i shall not. is it because what makes the sabbath holy is that i shall not blog?

no.

it's because i found someone much funnier than me to take up your time.

enjoy.
